The history of cowboy belts dates back to the settlement times of the American West. In the mid-19th century, the need for a durable and functional belt arose for cattlemen and cowboys living in the West. These belts had to be strong, durable and functional so that cattle herders and cowboys could use them in their daily work.
Although it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date as to when the first cowboy belts were made, belts appear to have been in widespread use in the American West in the late 1860s and early 1870s. During this period, cowboys and herders spent long periods of time on horseback and often needed sturdy belts that would free their hands to handle many tasks.
The production of cowboy belts generally took place in the American West, particularly in Texas, Kansas, and other areas with high concentrations of cattle ranchers and cowboys. In the first production of these belts, naturally occurring materials were used. Particularly durable leather types such as calfskin, horse skin or camel skin were preferred.
